Alccer do Sal History

Alccer do Sal was conquered by many different peoples. Before the Roman occupation it was called Eviom and had trade with the Mediterranean countries. The Romans called it Salatia Urbs Imperatoria, bearing the coin stamp and with the same rights as the cities of Antigo Lcio. Alccer also was capital city of the Visigothic municipality, it was dominated by the Arabs at the end of the 8th century and then became one of the most important trade cities in the peninsula. It was conquered by the Vikings at the end of the 10th century.

D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, tried to conquer it in 1158, but it only became a Portuguese village in 1217 with King Afonso II. King Manuel I married Princess D. Maria (the Spanish Catholic King's daughter), in Alccer do Sal in 1500. By this time, the castle built by the Arabs had no military purpose any longer, and so became a Carmelita de Aracelli convent during the 16th century.

Alccer do Sal Description

The recently restored extensive castle from the Moorish ruins is located on a promontory overlooking the peaceful valley of the River Sado which is to the southeast of Lisbon. The small town was an important site in Roman times for the culture of salt and there is a record of a fort existing as early as 6th centuries BC. The area is well known for the multiple species of birds that can often be seen and for its many stork nests. The town of Alccer do Sal is within convenient reach of Lisbon by using the Motorway. We also recommend that you visit the Rice Museum at Comporta and the village of Torro.

Alccer do Sal Nearby Locations

Just to the south is the town of Sines, which is know by it's geographical important port, the largest in Portugal and also by the industry side which unfortunately is reflected in the scenery of the town. It has a pleasant looking old centre and a beautiful well preserved small Castle overlooking the narrow streets of the old centre. It has several small beautiful sandy beaches usually with great panoramic views of the west coast. Also to the south is Santiago do Cacm, a lovely town full of caracter is also to be visited. To the north is Setbal, which acts as a dorm town to Lisbon, it has little character with many irregular concrete building, but it's known for fantastic fresh fish and friendly working population.
