Vila Nova Milfontes History
The village dates from the year 1468, founded by the king D.Jo�o II. The first
inhabitants were prisoners sentenced by minor delicts and fifty years after the
village establishment the population was no more than ten families. The village
was frequently attacked by pirates and a fortress was built in 1602. The
fortress is commonly called Saint Clement's Castle.

Just
32 km (20 miles) southwest of Santiago do Cac�m, and 186 km (115 miles) south of Lisbon
it's located in the Alentejo west coast.
This small village with a 5000 resident population has a great demand during
holidays due to its fine beaches with clear water and natural beauty. Moreover,
the surrounding area offers ecological tourism, paragliding training, a small
safari park and beautiful hideouts with small waterfalls.
Vila Nova de Milfontes means New town of a thousand springs. This is why it is
known as the three lies village, as it is old, it is a village and it has no
springs. Vila Nova de Milfontes has a beautiful estuary that gives shelter to
several species of birds and marine life. Moreover, wild boars and foxes can be
found in the surrounding woods. There is also an aquaculture centre nearby in
Moinho da Asneira.
It's definately a good stopover in lower Alentejo as you're heading south to the
Algarve is the little beach town of Vila Nova de Milfontes. At the wide mouth of
the Mira River, the sleepy resort is attracting more visitors because of the
soft white-sand beaches that line both sides of the river. There are no other
attractions and nothing to do here but relax, or perhaps search for antiques.
The castle that once protected the area from Moroccan and Algerian pirates has
been restored and is now an inn. After a day on the beach, you can head south to
even more beaches.

Sudoeste Music Festival - August
Sudoeste Festival is one of the biggest summer music festivals in Portugal, this
popular event takes place in the fishing town of Zambujeira do Mar on the pretty
Alentejo coast. During the four days of the festival a whole host of national
and international bands take to the stage playing through the day and evening.
After hours, world-renowned DJs keep the party going well into the next morning.
Past performers have included some big names from the world of indie and rock
music including Oasis, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Fatboy Slim,
Doves, Basement Jaxx, Dinossaur Jr and Black Uhuru. Famed for its great
line-ups, good weather and breathtaking coastline, this is a great environment
to see some of the best bands from around the world.
